2. BIOS Program (Click Here to view our BIOS Program)
BIOS – Biologically Integrated and Organic Systems
Our BIOS Program has been created to assist farmers move toward more sustainable farming methods. We advise starting with soil and tissue testing. We provide integrated and/or organic recommendations from your soil and tissue testing or we can conduct the testing for you.
We have a range of free information including the BIOS nutritional programs for a range of horticultural crops, our Understanding Soil Booklet, and the Technical Topics of this website. We also run meetings for groups of farmers interested in sustainable agriculture.
We provide tailored agronomic advice on sustainable and organic agriculture including organic farm plans, organic tree and vine establishment, organic weed and pest management.
There is no doubt organic/sustainable farming improves our environment. Organic agriculture has the potential to mitigate nearly 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions and save one-sixth of the global energy use (British Institute of Science, 2008).
Sustainable farming is not low input, but efficient input, and starts with examining the health of the soil. Soil consultants claim fertiliser application can be reduced by 20-30% on farms that are committed to restoring soil health via natural methods (Monk et al 2008).
Our goal is to educate and equip growers with cost-effective fertility programs which meet the needs of the current crop and continually improve the quality and productivity of farmers’ greatest asset – the soil.
Many farmers have experienced steady declines in soil quality and are becoming dissatisfied with farming methods that progressively rely more heavily on chemical inputs, without improved profitability.
Improving soil health is generally the first step to improving crop health and reducing the farm’s reliance on chemical inputs. Organic Farming Systems can help you to improve your soil and crop health with cost-effective inputs and advise on organic/sustainable farming methods.
